FAREWELL TO BRUSSELS…!
On Friday 12 June, I conducted my final concert and completed my tenure as Chief Conductor of the Belgian National Orchestra.
Even now, a few days after, it is difficult to put into words what I feel… Above all: gratitude. 🙏 The enormous outpouring of warmth, kindness and affection that I received yesterday from the orchestra, the organisation and the audience was simply overwhelming. It was one of those rare moments in life that will stay with me forever.
Four years ago, I arrived in Brussels to begin a new adventure. Looking back, I am filled with memories. I think of the musicians who welcomed me into their orchestra and into their lives. I think of the trustful partnerships that grew over the years. I think of the countless intense rehearsals, the many beautiful concerts, the laughter, the successes- and also of the challenging moments, the difficult conversations, and the setbacks that we overcame together.
We have lived through a lot.
Together we welcomed no less than 18 wonderful new musicians into the orchestra. We experienced two unforgettable Queen Elisabeth Competitions. We travelled to France, Germany and Korea. We explored a huge amount of repertoire, ranging from Beethoven to Mahler, from Brahms to Bartók, from Glass to Fafchamps, from Richard Strauss to Composer Wim Henderickx. We created new projects, new ideas and new initiatives. And after years of what often felt like a nomadic existence, like “camping”, the orchestra finally found a true rehearsal home in the new Atelier.
To the fabulous musicians who bring their passion, commitment and artistry every single day. To our intendant Bob, and all the amazing colleagues behind the scenes who work tirelessly to make everything possible. To the many partners and supporters of this great orchestra. And to our beloved audience, whose enthusiasm and loyalty have accompanied us unconditionally throughout these years. To all of you:
THANK YOU. 🫶
Thank you for your trust.
Thank you for your friendship.
Thank you for allowing me to share this remarkable journey with you.
Although my role as Chief Conductor comes to an end, this is not a goodbye. I am both very happy and deeply honored that our relationship will continue, and I look forward to returning as Conductor Laureate to this extraordinary orchestra and its extraordinary musicians.
The Belgian National Orchestra will always hold a special place in my heart.
With heartfelt gratitude,
✨
